Standard of the Brazilian Army

Estandarte do Exército Brasileiro

Article 28 of General Instructions 10-60, 8 August 2000, "General Instructions for the Application of the Regulation on Salutes, Honors, Signs of Respect, and Military Ceremonial of the Armed Forces," contains the passage "The use of the standard of the Army is regulated by the Norms for Use of the Standard and Coat of Arms of the Army." The standard was established by Ministerial Order 346 of 2 June 1997, "Ministerial Order on Standard and Coat of Arms."

The standard of the Army measures 80 x 120 cm, white with the Army coat of arms on the center, trimmed with gold fringe. The Army coat of arms is divided per pale red and sky blue, with a gold griffin segreant holding a silver eight-pointed star in his forepaws. The name of the service is inscribed in gold letters on a green scroll beneath the shield. Above the shield is a knight's helmet with red and sky blue mantling. The staff is topped by a nickel-plated lance-head finial, 32 cm high. Below the lance-head, there is a cravat (laço militar) divided lengthwise, sky blue and red, with a gold fringe at the end, tied in a bow and fastened with a cockade of blue with the Cruzeiro do Sul in white stars, red, and blue. Ten red streamers with campaign honors inscribed in sky blue letters are also attached below the lance-head. The staff is 212 cm long, not including the lance-head, and 3.5 cm in diameter. It is covered in sky blue velvet with a red spiral strip. The color belt is 10 cm in width, covered with sky blue velvet with red velvet stripes.

Use of the National Flag by the Army

Brazilian Army troops carry the national flag in the dimensions 90 x 128 cm. It is mounted on the same size staff and with the same finial as the Army standard, but the cravat is divided lengthwise yellow and green, with a gold fringe at the end, tied in a bow and fastened with a cockade of blue with the Cruzeiro do Sul in white stars, yellow, and green. The staff is covered in green velvet with a yellow spiral strip. The color belt is 10 cm in width, covered with green velvet with yellow velvet stripes of width and number varying with the rank of the organization's commander.

Commander of the Army (Probable Flag)

Comandante do Exército

[Commander of the Army (Brazil)]by Joseph McMillan

I saw this not as a flag but as part of an organizational device for the office of the commander of the Brazilian Army. However, I believe it probably is the flag (officially known as a bandeira-insígnia) of the commander of the army, since the emblem in the hoist is the army coat of arms and the triple-striped green and yellow fly is typical of army personal flags.

Minister of the Army (Obsolete)

Ministro do Exército

[Minister of the Army (Brazil)]by Joseph McMillan

The flag of the Minister of War (later Minister of the Army) was divided vertically, the hoist green with a golden-yellow lozenge throughout and thereon the national coat of arms, minus the scroll and background rays; fly divided horizontally into three equal stripes, blue, red, and blue. (Blue and red are the traditional colors of the Brazilian Army.) The post of Minister of the Army has been replaced by those of Minister of State for Defense and Commander of the Army.
